Trump condemns Kansas bar shooting in speech

The Latest on a deadly shooting at a Kansas bar that some witnesses said was racially motivated (all times local):
8:20 p.m.
President Donald Trump opened his address to a joint session of Congress by condemning the recent threats against Jewish community centers and a fatal shooting in Kansas being investigated as a hate crime.
Trump on Tuesday said that "while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms."
The president had received criticism from some civil rights groups who accused him of being slow in denouncing the violent acts. He had yet to discuss the killing of Srinivas Kuchibhotla, one of two Indian men shot inside a bar in Olathe, Kansas.
There have also been dozens of threats against Jewish community centers — and vandalism in Jewish cemeteries — across the nation in recent weeks.

The FBI is confirming for the first time that it is investigating as a hate crime last week's Kansas bar shooting that killed an Indian man and wounded another.
The FBI said in a statement Tuesday that it bases that probe on "the initial investigative activity" involving the Feb. 22 attack at Austins Bar and Grill in Olathe, Kansas.
The FBI is declining additional comment, citing the investigation.
Witnesses to the shooting said 51-year-old suspect Adam Purinton yelled "get out of my country" at 32-year-olds Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani before opening fire.
Kuchibhotla was killed and Madasani was wounded. Both were working as engineers for GPS device-maker Garmin.
Another bar patron who tried to intervene also was wounded.

Pregnant California Mom Killed While Lying in Bed with 4-Month-Old Son: ‘Our Hearts Are Split Wide Open’

California police are investigating the death of a pregnant, 20-year-old mother who was fatally shot in her bed Sunday morning while her 4-month-old son laid next to her, PEOPLE confirms.
Investigators are speaking to several people who were at the party in Amber Baker’s Fresno apartment when the six-months-pregnant woman was shot with little Ayden beside her, ABC 30 reports. Ayden was not injured.
“We are sad, mad and confused and out hearts are split wide open,” Baker’s father, Vance Baker, tells PEOPLE. “We can’t even focus on nothing but Amber. And this sad death to my daughter is so unfair.”
He adds: “We want every one to know how great Amber truly was.”
Baker’s sister, Cassie, told the Fresno Bee that Baker invited some friends over to the apartment, which she shared with Cassie and three others, for a party. Cassie said she left the party early after an argument with Baker.

“Who would want to do this to her?” Cassie said. “Me and her, we were unstoppable together.”
Police said Baker was shot in the upper body. Police are enlisting the help of the public to determine the circumstances surrounding her death, according to ABC.

The family has set up a GoFundMe fundraising page to cover funeral costs.
“Amber had a zest for life, her smile was contagious,” the family wrote on the page. “She brought laughter and smiles to all. Amber leaves behind a 4 month old beautiful baby boy, Ayden. Her baby was the light of her life.”
